Mozambique have amicably terminated the contract of manager Gert Engels only three days before the World Cup qualifier against Egypt.

“We had a friendly meeting with the manager and we agreed that leaving the team is the best solution,” Mozambique FA general secretary Filipe Johane said.

“The assessment of his performance was not good. He doesn’t leave for failing to qualify for the World Cup, but because the team have shown no progress since he took over in 2012.”

Engels' sacking comes a few days after Mozambique were hammered 6-1 in Guinea to lose any hope of making the final qualifiers.

It was confirmed that former internationals João Chissano e Mano Mano will be in charge of the Black Mambas against Egypt on Sunday.
