Zamalek board member and former star Ibrahim Youssef has passed away at the age of 54, the Cairo club said on their website.

Youssef, who has been struggling with illness recently, suffered a heart attack on Wednesday night.

The former stopper is regarded as one of the best-ever to fill in the sweeper role in the history of Egyptian football, having been the country’s top defender during the 80s.

He was included in France Football’s top three African footballers for two consecutive years in 1984 and 1985.

Youssef, the elder brother of former Egypt midfielder Ismail, helped Zamalek win the CAF Champions League twice in 1984 and 1986.
