On October 8 2005, Cameroon were denied a place in the World Cup finals in the most dramatic fashion, thanks to a 1-1 draw with Egypt in Yaoundé.

While Egypt had no hopes of reaching the Germany finals, hosts Cameroon needed a win to book their place for the fifth time running.

A goal by Rudolph Douala was cancelled out by Mohamed Shawky with 11 minutes remaining but the real drama started in the sixth minute of injury time.

The Indomitable Lions were awarded a penalty and defender Pierre Wome took the responsibility of sending his nation to the World Cup.

“No one wanted to take that penalty. No one!” said Wome, who claimed to have received death threats following his historic miss.

“Neither Samuel Eto'o nor our captain Rigobert Song, because they knew what could have happened if they missed. I have always had the courage and I went to the spot.”

As Ivory Coast snatched the ticket to the World Cup, Wome was vilified by home fans for years and lost his place in the Cameroon squad.
