The pending resumption of domestic football is the best means of recovery for Egyptian football, according to veteran Wael Gomaa.

Gomaa, 38, captained Egypt in a forgettable attempt to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, with the seven-time African champions losing 7-2 on aggregate to Ghana.

"The return of the league is the best way to get the national team back on the right track," the defender told Ahli's website.

"The suspension of domestic football had a negative impact on players. We are always frustrated for the lack of competetive football.

"It also took its toll on Ahli at the Club World Cup, unlike last year when we played for third place."

After winning the Champions League title, Ahli went to represent Africa at the Club World Cup, only to suffer two disappointing defeats in Morocco.
