Lazio striker Paolo Di Canio has been handed a one-match ban and fined 10,000 Euros ($12.2 thousands) for a fascist salute to fans, Football Italia magazine reported on Monday.

The 37-year-old striker made the controversial salute during Lazio's Serie A clash against Livorno in December, a week before repeating it again against Juventus in Stadio Olimpico.

This is the second time within one month Di Canio has been handed a financial fine and a one-game ban after his gesture towards fans in his team's encounter against Juventus.

The former West Ham strikers' actions were widely condemned by different football authorities in Europe who called for a heavy fine for the Italian veteran.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that players who make this sort of action should be banned from football for life.

Di Canio stated previously that his salute to fans has nothing to deal with politics, stressing that this action is a way of expressing commitment to Roman people.

But then he made a U-turn and said that he won't make this salute again for "the good of Lazio".

"From today, for the time being, I will avoid using gestures which some people interpret as demon like. I'll do this for the good of the team." he said.
