Manchester City striker Robbie Fowler rejoined former club Liverpool on a free transfer until the end of the season, the European champions said on Friday.

The 30-year-old striker returned to the Anfield after a four-year spell out of the Merseyside in which he played for Leeds United and Manchester City.

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez said he is delighted by Fowler's arrival, while expressing his hope that the former England acre could be a valuable addition to the Reds' squad.

"My idea is for Liverpool to take one step forward and I think Robbie can help us make that step," he said.

"We have signed a player with so much passion for this football club and I think he will act as an example to every player here in how much he loves Liverpool," he added.

Fowler is Liverpool's third signing during the winter transfer window after acquiring the services of Daniel Agger and Jan Kromkamp.
