World number one Roger Federer survived a tough opening match at the Dubai Tennis Championships against fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka on Tuesday to advance to the second round.

A peculiar second set witnessed seven service breaks as the Swiss players alternated breaks for the first four games before Federer edged to a 4-2 lead.

Wawrinka, ranked 54 in the world, tried to level the set as he broke Federer’s serve again to narrow the score 3-4 however the seven-time Grand Slam champion finally prevailed to seal a 7-6, 6-3 victory.

The 24-year-old star next takes on Kuwaiti wild card Mohammed Al Ghareeb, who defeated Omar Bahrouzyan of the United Arab Emirates.
