English side Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals for the first time despite their 2-1 defeat to Italy's Roma in the round of 16 second leg on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough, who beat Roma 1-0 in the first-leg at the Riverside Stadium, were in front in the 32nd minute through Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's goal before Brazil's Alessandro Mancini equalized for the hosts two minutes before the break.

The Brazilian midfielder sealed the victory for Roma in the 66th minute from the penalty spot but it was not enough to hand the capital side a place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, German side Hamburg were knocked out of the UEFA Cup on away-goal rule as they beat Romania's Rapid Bucharest 3-1 at home.

Benjamin Loath, Sergei Barbarez and Rafael van der Vaart scored for Hamburg while Mugurel Buga bagged the decisive goal for Rapid.

Rapid are through to the quarter-finals on away-goal rule as they beat Hamburg 2-0 in the first-leg.

Spanish side Sevilla also progressed to the same stage after beating France's Lille 2-1 on aggregate.
