Villarreal midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme revealed that he was still in pain about squandering a spot-kick against Premiership club Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

"I always feel bad when we don't win. I am responsible for taking penalties and sometimes you score, others you don't," Riquelme was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Saturday.

"But I am proud of my team and what we have achieved because we have had a marvellous Champions League campaign," he added.

The Argentine, whose missed shot resulted in his side’s departure from the Champions League on Tuesday, also insisted that Villarreal underwent an excellent campaign in the competition and said that he wanted to stay in the club.

"We deserve credit for what we have done. Everyone in the Champions League wants to reach the final and we were so close, without having a side as strong as others.

"I hope I can continue to help the club grow because it is hard to believe what we have achieved over the last three years," Riquelme said.

Villarreal hold 10th in the La Liga, only four points away from Sevilla and from securing a UEFA Cup spot, with only four games remaining.
