Bayern crowned German champions

Bayern Munich completed the German double on Saturday after clinching the Bundesliga title as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Kaiserslautern, while closest rivals Hamburg slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Hertha Berlin.

Halil Altintop put Kaiserslautern ahead in the 26 minutes before Andreas Ottl's equalizer midway through the second half handed the Bavarian giants their second successive league title.

The 20-time German champions became the first team in the country's history to secure the local double two years in a row, after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 in the cup final earlier last week.

Bayern are on top of the Bundesliga table with 74 points, six ahead of second-place Hamburg with just one game left.

Hamburg's hopes of catching leaders Bayern were demolished after they suffered a 4-2 defeat to 10-man Hertha Berlin, as they needed a win to keep the league title in sight.

Andreas Neuendorf's goal for Hertha in the 13th minute cancelled out Piotr Trochowski's opener early in the 10th minute before Benjamin Lauth restored the lead in the 19th minute.

Alexander Madlung leveled the score in the 55th minute, before was sent-off just four minutes later. Two goals by Niko Kovac and Marko Pantelic in the 69th and 72nd minutes ensured the victory for the capital side.

Elsewhere, Mainz, whom Egyptian forward Mohamed Zidan plays for, secured their status in the top flight after beating Schalke 04 1-0 thanks to Benjamin Auer's goal in the 14th minute.

In other matches, MSV Duisburg beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-0, Bayer Leverkusen tied Nurnberg 2-2, Borussia Dortmund held by Frankfurt 1-1, Stuttgart defeated Wolfsburg 2-1, Werder Bremen humiliated Cologne 6-0 and Borussia Monchengladbach were held to a 2-2 draw with Hannover.
