Ahmed Hossam "Mido" may not be offered a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur as the Premiership side target Bayer Leverkusen's Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, BBC Sport reported on Thursday.

"Tottenham have been in contact and are now prepared to pay the transfer fee," Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller was quoted as saying.

"He wants something different and it is now Dimitar's decision but it hurts us to lose such a class player."

Mido is on loan to White Hart Lane from Italian club AS Roma till the end of the season.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol said he may not offer Mido a move on permanent basis due to his repeated injuries in the second half of the season.

According to BBC, landing Berbatov could pave the way for releasing the Egyptian international.

The 23-year-old striker scored 11 goals this season with Tottenham, five behind the club's top-scorer Robbie Keane.

Jol said in the beginning of the season that Mido should score at least 15 goals to stay with the club.
