"He has damaged the area around the Achilles tendon in his left ankle," Spain doctor Genaro Borras was quoted as saying by BBC on Thursday.
The 25-year-old, who joined Chelsea for £8 million from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in June 2005, now only has 10 days to recuperate, but Borras doubts if he will recover that quickly.
"We will do further tests on Tuesday. I hope it heals but I have my doubts. It could put his participation in the finals in doubt," he added.
On the other hand, Borras revealed that Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado’s injury wasn’t as serious as initially thought.
"He has not torn the muscle in his leg and has only suffered a strain, which was less serious than we had originally thought," Borras said.
"He will be able to return to action on Tuesday and we will see how the injury has healed over the following four to six days," he added.
