Arjen Robben slotted home in the first period to give Holland a 1-0 victory over Serbia in the World Cup on Sunday.

The Chelsea winger scored in the 18th minute to hand Serbia, who have never lost in the World Cup qualifiers campaign, a defeat in their opening clash.

The victory placed Holland in second place on three points, the same tally of Argentina who lead on goal difference.

Holland coach Marco Van Basten opted for Ruud Van Nistelrooy upfront with Robin Van Persie and Robben giving support from the flanks.

In the 15th minute, Serbia striker Savo Milosevic ran forward inside the area and hit a low shot that was collected easily by Holland keeper Edwin Van der Sar.

Shortly after, Holland were in front when Nistelrooy flicked the ball over to Robben who controlled it and advanced to slam the ball past Serbia Keeper Dragoslav Jervic.

Robben continued to bother Serbia's defense with his skilful and speedy display, making several attempts on goal.

In the 22nd minute, Robben sent a powerful drive from the edge of the area but was denied by Jervic.

Serbia Substitute Ognjen Koroman fired a powerful shot from a tight angle in the 70th minute but was blocked by Van der Sar.
