The Spaniard beat rival Michael Schumacher of Ferrari by 13.9 seconds to extend his lead over the German ace to 23 points with ten races to go this season.

McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen of Finland came in third place after a fierce battle with Schumacher.

Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed, Toyota's Ralf Schumacher and Mark Webber of Williams were involved in a crash that saw them all bow out in the first lap.

Brit Jenson Button of Honda also had to retire from the race when he spun off on oil from his smoking Honda engine in the ninth lap.
