Switzerland failed to convert any of their first three penalties to lose to Ukraine 3-0 in the shootout and exit the World Cup from the round of 16.

The tight game ended with a shootout after the normal and extra times finished in a goalless draw.

Marco Streller and Ricardo Cabanas couldn't beat Ukraine keeper Oleksander Shovkovsky while Tranquillo Barnetta slammed his shot against the woodwork.

This was the first time in the World Cup's history that a team fails to score in three attempts of the shootout.

Ukraine star Andriy Shevchenko missed the first shot but Artem Milevsky, Serhiy Rebrov and Oleg Gusev made up for their captain's miss with three consecutive goals.

Debuting Ukraine now advance to play Italy in the quarter-finals next Friday while Switzerland bow out without conceding a goal in four encounters.
