"My days playing with the national team are over," the 33-year-old defender said on his official website.
"It's time to move on and I hope I can hand over the number six shirt to someone else who can continue to win for our country," he added.
The Real Madrid player, who made his international debut against USA in 1992, won 125 caps for Brazil.
He was a member of Brazil's 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cup squads and has a gold and silver medal to his name in addition to two Copa America titles in 1997 and 1999 and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1997
"I thank my team mates and the supporters who were always on my side. A big hug to everyone," Carlos added.
Carlos is known for his trademark powerful free kicks, ground-breaking pace speed and aggressivness.
He began his career at home with Palmeiras before joining Inter Milan in 1996 and the Real Madrid a year later.
