Argentinean referee Horacio Elizondo will officiate the World Cup final between Italy and France, FIFA have announced on Thursday.

Horacio, who was also in charge of the tournament opener between Germany and Costa Rica, has been chosen ahead of Germany’s Markus Merk and Lubos Michel of Slovakia.

The physical education teacher was involved in a famous incident during the World Cup when he sent off England striker Wayne Rooney for a stamp on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Argentinean duo Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero will be Elizondo's assistants in Sunday's showdown.

Japan's Toru Kamikawa will referee the third/fourth clash between Germany and Portugal on Saturday.
