Germany striker Miroslav Klose is doubtful for his side’s World Cup third place play-off against Portugal after sustaining a calf injury, Sky Sports reported on Thursday.

The Werder Bremen striker is aiming to clinch the World Cup top scorer award as he scored five goals so far, two ahead of teammate Lukas Podolski and France’s Thierry Henry.

“I want to play, but if there is no point then I'll have to pass. We'll have to see how it is on match day,” Klose said.

Meanwhile, Germany defender Per Mertesacker has been ruled out of Portugal’s game due to foot injury.

“Mertesacker has left the World Cup base in Berlin and will undergo heel surgery,” German football federation spokesman Harald Stenger said.

Middlesbrough defender Robert Huth is likely to replace Mertesacker, partnering Christoph Metzelder in the center of defense.

Germany will face Portugal in the tournament’s third place play-off after they were eliminated from the semi-final following a 2-0 defeat to Italy.
