Alfio Basile resigned

Alfio Basile has been named new Argentina manager, succeeding Jose Pekerman who resigned after the World Cup quarter-finals exit, the Argentinean Football Association (AFA) said.

"We have reached an agreement with Basile," the official website of the AFA quoted chairman Julio Grondona as saying in a press conference on Monday.

Basile's name surfaced among others when Pekerman stepped down following Argentina's defeat on penalties against Germany.

Basile, currently at helm as Boca Junior coach, will take over on September 15th after his side's second game in the domestic league.

Argentinean double winner Boca were standing firm on their coach but club president Mauricio Macri finally allowed the move but noted he will need time to find a replacement.

The 62-year-old Basile, who coached Argentina from 1991 till the 1994 World Cup, said he was proud to be selected again for the national team post.

"We agreed everything in just 30 minutes," Basile told a press conference. "I haven't signed the contract yet but I am the new Argentina coach."

"Like any other Argentinean would be, I am very proud to be selected for this post and I accept it with big joy."
