Manchester United plans to appeal charges against Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes that could lead to a three-match ban for each player.

The Football Association received the referee's report from the Dutch FA on Wednesday regarding the dismissal of the two players in a friendly game against Porto in Amsterdam

The FA will use the report to explore the two players' actions in the game.

The pair were shown red cards during the friendly because of supposed violent conduct and serious foul play.

Manchester United released a statement on their official website indicating their intention to appeal the charges.

If the appeal is struck down, the players will undergo a three-match ban and miss games against Charlton Athletic, Watford and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, since the FA received the report at such a late date, Rooney and Scholes will be allowed to participate in the season-opener against Fulham on August 20th.
