Italian international Christian Vieri has signed a one-year contract with Atalanta, the Serie A club said on their official website on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old player was available on a free transfer after a month long spell with Sampdoria, and is set to return to the team he played for over ten years ago.

Vieri joined Sampdoria in early in July but came to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with the club.

Vieri, who missed the World Cup through a knee injury he picked up while with Monaco last season, has played for Italian clubs Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan, as well as Atletico Madrid in Spain.

The Australian born player had been close to retirement until Atalanta president Ivan Ruggeri had orchestrated a homecoming to the Bergamo.

"The player has big motivations and Bergamo's environment is ideal for him," sporting director Giancarlo Osti told Italian Rai TV.
