Real Madrid made a late move to sign defender Roberto Ayala from Valencia, Spanish paper Marca reported on Wednesday.
Real's Franco Baldini met with a Valencia official in Madrid and discussed the possibilities of landing the Argentinean international, the sports daily said.
Ayala has fallen out with Valencia after the Mediterranean side refused his move to Villarreal despite his clear decision to leave.
According to the paper, Valencia are likely to turn down the offer.
In case Valencia agreed a deal with Real, Fabio Capello's side need to release on of their non-EU players to make way for Ayala.
