Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko will be out of action for three months after dislocating his shoulder in his side's 1-0 Carling Cup victory over Birmingham on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately Momo will require surgery which is scheduled to take place next week," a Liverpool spokesman said on Thursday.

"It is anticipated he will be out of action for three months."

The Malian midfielder sustained a serious eye injury last season in Liverpool's UEFA Champions League clash against Benfica and there were doubts over his career.

"They are not very common injuries, the kind he has sustained, it was his eye last season and now the shoulder," Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"It was an accident but it was clear something was wrong. Momo is a player who doesn't like to stay on the ground."

Skipper Steven Gerrard, who currently occupies the right-wing role, is expected to regain his place in the heart of Reds' midfield.

"Now we have to manage with the players we have until January and I am happy with the squad but when you lose a player that is playing every game like Momo, it is a problem," Benitez added.
