Qatar's Khalfan Ibrahim has been named Asian Player of the Year in the AFC awards that took place in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Al-Sadd player beat out Badr Al-Mutawaa of Kuwait and Mohamed Al-Shalhoub of Saudi Arabia.

Ibrahim became the first Qatari to win Asian football's most prestigious award.

"I never thought I would win it. It is a triumph for my teammates and club," Ibrahim was quoted as saying by the AFC official website.

Ibrahim excelled in Qatar's FIFA Under-17 World Championship campaign in Peru last year before becoming a regular fixture in the national team.

He succeeds Saudi Arabia's Hamad Al-Montasheri who won the award in 2005.
