Premiership club Reading are interested in signing Ahli playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika on loan in January, coach Steve Coppell said on Thursday.

"Through an agent we have some details on him," Coppell told the Reading Evening Post.

"We are exploring the possibility of doing something on loan."

Reading have been monitoring Abou-Treika since his brilliant performances with Egypt in their African Cup of Nations.

"We have made preliminary enquiries, but nothing else," insisted Coppell.

The Egyptian wizard, who will lead Ahli in their second successive FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December, is also keen on playing in Europe since last season.

"I am sure I can join a big European club," Abou-Treika told FilGoal.com in an interview in March.

"Many European agents are still interested in me and I hope Ahli will agree on one of the offers that I am expecting in the off-season."

Coppell admitted the 28-year-old was not Reading's only option as the winter transfer window approaches.

"The mail every day brings in 20-odd player recommendations through agents," said Coppell. "He (Abou-Treika) is just one who is a possibility."

"The closer we get to January the more names come our way."

Reading, who were promoted to the Premiership this season, are currently eighth in the Premier League table on 22 points, trailing Arsenal and Liverpool on goal difference.
