Qatar, UAE drawn against title holders Japan in Asian Cup

Japan were crowned Asian champions in 2004

Gulf sides Qatar and United Arab Emirates have been drawn to face title holders Japan and co-hosts Vietnam in Group B of the 2007 Asian Cup finals next summer.

The draw for Asia’s top national competition took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center in Malaysia on Tuesday.

For the first time in history, the Asian Cup finals will be hosted by four nations: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam from July 7th to 29th.

Three-time Asian champions Saudi Arabia were drawn in Group D with Indonesia, South Korea and neighbors Bahrain.

Asian Cup debutants Australia, who joined the AFC this year, will play in Group A with Thailand, Iraq and Oman.

Iran were seeded in Group C with Malaysia, Uzbekistan and China.

The opening ceremony will take place in Bangkok, Thailand while the final will be played in Indonesian capital Jakarta.
