FIFA has given Liverpool an exceptional permission to sign Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano from West Ham.

"After due consideration of all aspects," read an official statement published by the world football governing body.

"The FIFA single judge ruled that 'upon registration for Liverpool FC during the present registration period, the player Javier Mascherano is eligible to play in official matches with the said club with immediate effect'."

FIFA transfer rules don't allow to play for more than two clubs between July 1st and June 30th of the following year.

Mascherano has already played for Corinthians and West Ham during this time period but FIFA's decision was based upon the fact that South American and European seasons overlap.

The former River Plate midfielder joined West Ham alongside compatriot Carlos Tevez last August but the duo failed to help the Premiership strugglers to overcome their relegation battle.

Liverpool confirmed the decision but said the deal is still suspended till the Premier League issues an approval.

"The move from West Ham still needs to be ratified by the Premier League- and we await their decision," a club's spokesman said.
