Everton's attacking midfielder Tim Cahill will miss the rest of the season after breaking his leg in the Premiership game at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Australian international was carried off after 43 minutes in Everton's 1-1 draw against Sheffield after turning on his ankle with no one challenging him.

Scans proved a serious injury and a major setback for David Moyes after a fractured fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot was confirmed.

"We have suffered a massive blow in losing Tim today, he has broken a metatarsal" Moyes told the club's official website on Saturday.

"We need Tim Cahill in games like this and we will also need him to score the goals." The Everton manager added.

Cahill has just returned to action four weeks ago after a 2 month injury layoff.
