Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry has been called up to England's squad that will face Israel and Andorra in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Barry has been called up as a replacement for Manchester United's defender Gary Neville who was ruled out after injuring his ankle in the Premiership match against Bolton on Saturday.

Even though Barry plays on the left side and Neville is a right-back, Steve McClaren is likely to draft either Jamie Carragher or Phil Neville who could play on both flanks.

McClaren's defensive dilemma continues as he is forced to wait on the fitness of the doubtful Micah Richards, who is considered a natural replacement for Gary Neville in right-back.

Another blow for the England manager was the news that Charlton striker Darren Bent was taken off injured eight minutes from time in his team's Premiership match against Newcastle on Sunday.

Charlton boss Alan Pardew advised McClaren to omit Bent from his squad after the game.

If McClaren decides to rest Bent, he would likely resort to England Under-21 striker David Nugent who is already in McClaren's standby list.
