Ascoli and Messina have been relegated from the Italian Serie A after suffering defeats to Torino and Inter Milan respectively on Sunday.

At the Stadio San Filippo, Argentinean striker Hernan Crespo notched home in the 72nd minute, seconds after his introduction, to seal the victory for Inter, who were recently crowned league champions

Messina earlier wasted a chance to grab the lead when Arturo Di Napoli's penalty kick was blocked by Francesco Toldo.

Ascoli slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Torino at the Stadio Delle Alpi, thanks to Alessandro Rosina's goal in the 18th minute.

They are officially relegated as they lie at the bottom of the table on 21 points, 14 adrift of the safety zone with three matches to go.

Messina are 19th with 25 points and have also lost any hopes of keeping their place in the top flight next season.

Elsewhere, AC Milan failed to guarantee their UEFA Champions League place next season after they were held to a goalless draw by Fiorentina at San Siro.

Milan occupy fourth place on 60 points, one short of third-placed Lazio, who registered a 1-0 home win over Livorno.
