Newcastle United have appointed Sam Allardyce as the club's new manager, following the resignation of former coach Glenn Roeder on Sunday.

Allardyce's arrival at St.James' Park was an expected move, as the former Bolton manager has been the number one contender for the job after his successful spell with the Trotters.

Magpies' chairman Freddy Shepherd was the main reason behind Allardyce's appointment, and 'Big Sam' appreciated his interest.

"Once Freddy Shepherd made it clear he wanted me then there was no doubt where I would be going," Allardyce told the club's official website.

"When I met Freddy I could feel his passion for Newcastle United. He is a passionate supporter and it's well known throughout football that he has always supported his managers.

"After leaving Bolton last week I was expecting a longer rest but once Freddy opened that door I was in."

Allardyce surprisingly resigned from the Bolton job a fortnight ago, just one day after grabbing a famous 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in a result which largely affected the top of the table battle.

Big Sam revealed his excitement with the new job, as he hinted at helping the club to deliver silverware for the first time since 38 years.

"I suppose this is the greatest challenge I've ever had, but it is one I am excited about and one I am looking forward to," he added.

"It's no secret that what has happened in the past is not good enough for a club as big as Newcastle United and it is now my job to change all that."
