Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello admitted that the way he and the Spanish club’s board handled the issue of England midfielder David Beckham was "wrong".

"We were all wrong. We all made the decision in the sporting area, and it's mostly my fault. Truthfully, we made a mistake with him," said the Italian coach in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS on Monday.

Beckham reached an agreement with MLS side LA Galaxy to join the team at the end of his contract with Real Madrid after failing to agree a contract extension with the Capital club in December.

Following the announcement of his move to America, Capello said that the former England captain will not feature for Real again.

But soon, Capello was forced to recall Beckham who showed his true mettle and regained his top form to return to the starting line up.

"On the sporting side we have made a decision and I am the one that has the maximum responsibility," conceded Capello.

"The truth is that with him (Beckham) we made a mistake. Beckham is a great player. Now he is playing at the same level as he did at Manchester (United).

"He is a player that has recovered his physical and psychological condition because he was upset not to be playing with his national team."

Capello’s comments come after Beckham’s agent confirmed his departure to the U.S. even after Real Madrid president said on Sunday that he wants the iconic player to stay at the Bernabeu.

"The public want him to stay and I want him to stay," Calderon told Spanish media in Paris.

Capello also confirmed his fondness of the 32-year-old.

"Beckham would be a very important player for Madrid, there’s no doubt about that. If the club tells me that Beckham is staying, I would be very happy," said Capello.
