Argentina and Mexico registered two thrashing victories to complete an astonishing high scoring quarter-finals phase in the 42nd edition of the Copa America in Venezuela.

Argentina rout Peru 4-0 to book their semi-finals place, and Mexico will face them after they blanked Paraguay 6-0 in Maturin.

Argentina had to wait into the second half to start the show, as Juan Roman Riquelme scored the opener two minutes after the break, and Lionel Messi doubled the lead at the hour mark.

In the 75th minute, Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano tapped in the third, before marksman Riquelme had the final word with the fourth goal four minutes from time.

Whilst Argentina started action in the second half, Mexico waited no more than three minutes to begin the demolition.

In the third minute, Paraguay goalkeeper Aldo Bobadilla conceded a penalty and was also sent off in the process, Nery Castillo made no mistake from the spot.

Paraguay's poor substitute keeper Joel Fernando Zayas had a nightmare first-half introduction, as Gerardo Torrado doubled the lead before Castillo hit his second of the game and fourth of the tournament.

The second half did not witness more improvement for the hapless Zayas, who received three more goals from Fernando Arce, Cuauthemoc Blanco (penalty) and Omar Bravo.

Argentina and Mexico's drubbing victories follow previous goal feast games, as Brazil thrashed Chile 6-1 and Uruguay outclassed hosts Venezuela 4-1 to book their semi-finals places.
