Werder Bremen have been handed a major boost after learning that Torsten Frings has not torn cruciate ligament and won’t be out for months as initially feared, the Bundesliga side said on Wednesday.

"I'm totally relieved by the results. It is still frustrating of course that I've picked up an injury at this stage of the season but I will be back in the team in the foreseeable future," Frings told the club’s official website.

The German international midfielder sustained the injury during Bremen’s pre-season friendly against second division side SC Paderborn on Tuesday.

An MRI scan confirmed that Frings has torn cruciate ligament in his right knee but following a detailed examination, it was discovered that the injury is much less serious.

Frings will not undergo surgery and will be sidelined for six weeks rather than several months.

"Finally some good news, we haven't had so much of that lately. I'm delighted for torsten, and for the whole team, that it's not such a bad injury," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said.
