Shawki has flown to England right after Egypt's friendly game against Ivory Coast on Wednesday to undergo a trial with the Premiership side.
However, Southgate has cancelled the trial set for Shawki as he aims to wrap up the deal before the transfer window closes on the 31st of August.
"Southgate was happy with Shawki's form and told the player he will not undergo a trial. The only thing remaining now is the medical test," Boro's Egyptian striker Mido told FilGoal.com.
"Shawki has already undergone some tests on Friday and will continue on Saturday. If he successfully passes the medical, Middlesbrough officials will negotiate with their Ahli counterparts to conclude the deal."
If the 25-year-old completed the transfer to the Riverside, he will become the third Egyptian in the Premiership along with Mido and Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly.
