Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta died on Tuesday three days after collapsing during last Saturday's game against Getafe in the Liga opener.

The former 22-year-old defender collapsed on the pitch but was rescued by his teammates before relapsing again in the dressing room and required cardiac resuscitation.

Earlier today the doctors in the Hospital of Virgen del Rocio in Seville announced that "the player remains in the hospital in a very critical state and his progress is unfavorable."

UEFA postponed Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Sevilla, with the Sevilla squad flying back to Spain from Greece.

While AC Milan, who are scheduled to face Sevilla on Friday in the European Super Cup, expressed their condolences at the player's death and said they are ready to call off the game if necessary.
