Neville, who has been on the sidelines for six months with an ankle injury and then a thigh problem at this season's start, could be back in action in two weeks time.
"I hope to be playing games in the next couple of weeks," the 32-year-old told MUTV on Tuesday.
"It has been frustrating but I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I just need to get fit.
"Because I've been out for such a long time I think the Everton game, on 15 September, is going to be too soon, I think it will probably be after that."
Striker Rooney could make a swift return from his fractured metatarsal injury, which he picked up in United's Premiership opener against Reading.
English papers reported that the 21-year-old international is set for a place on the bench against his former club Everton on Saturday's Premiership clash at Goodison Park.
Rooney, who was initially expected to return in one month, will boost United's frontline if he could make his comeback before the defending champions take on Chelsea on September 23rd.
