Bayern Munich chairman Franz Beckenbauer believes Germany are capable of winning the Euro 2008.

The Mannschaft became the first country to book their place in the competition following a goalless away draw with Ireland on Saturday.

"Germany are the best and most consistent team in Europe," Beckenbauer was quoted as saying by German daily Bild on Monday.

"Top teams such as Italy, France and England are struggling to reach Euro 2008 while Germany's displays since the 2006 World Cup have been very good."

Germany, who finished third in the World Cup on home soil, are in charge of Group D with 23 points and have three matches remaining.

Beckenbauer heaped praise on coach Joachim Loew, who took over at Germany following the resignation of Jurgen Klinsmann.

"It would be good if Loew stays longer. At the moment there is no one better than him with his system and his coaching staff."

German Football Federation (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger said Loew, whose current deal runs out after next summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland, is set to be offered a contract extension.
