English Premier League side Tottenham have sacked coach Martin Jol on Thursday night following the 2-1 defeat against Getafe in the UEFA Cup.

"We can confirm that the board has this evening asked Martin Jol, the club manager, and Chris Hughton, the first team coach, to stand down from their positions with immediate effect," a statement said on the club's official website.

The Spurs were tipped to be among the top-four challengers this season but instead they dropped to the 18th place of the 20-team table.

"I can understand the position of the club in light of the results. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here," Jol was quoted saying on the club's website.

"Tottenham Hotspur is a special club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you -- I shall never forget them."

Coach Clive Allen will be in charge of the first team in the upcoming period. The board hasn't announced Jol's successor yet but Sevilla's boss Juande Ramos has been linked with the job since last summer.

These are some good news for Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly who could find himself again in the team after being kicked out by Jol.
