A tragic weekend in the Scottish Premier League was blurred by the sudden death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell during Saturday's game with Dundee United.

O'Donnell, 35, collapsed seconds before his supposed substitution late in the 5-3 win, as both teams' medical staff believed he suffered from seizure.

The attacking midfielder was then stretched off to hospital, but his revival attempts went in vain as Motherwell announced his death hours after the game.

"Unfortunately I can confirm very, very sad news that Phil O'Donnell has lost his life," Motherwell chairman Bill Dickie said.

"I don't want to say anything more than how devastated everyone at the club is for his wife and his young children. That's what we are all feeling tonight, nothing else matters," said manager Mark McGhee.

"Obviously from the club's point of view we'll gather round to give his family as much support as they need."

O'Donnell, who also played for Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday, had a brief spell with the Scottish national team under the management of former coach Craig Brown.
