Hertha Berlin are desperate to keep their defender Gilberto and have been reportedly ready to offer him a new deal that will cost them all their winter transfer budget.

"We offered him a new contract and we hope he would extend his stay," Hertha Berlin general manager Dieter Hoeness told Bild.

Tottenham have been linked with the 31-year old full back whose contract expires in June. But coach Juande Ramos wants him immediately to provide a cover for Young-Pyo Lee who has been consistently injured lately.

"We are trying to persuade him to stay and we won't make any more signings to give him a very good deal," added Hoeness.

Gilberto moved to Berlin in 2004 and made a huge impact since then, the form that earned him a regular place in Brazil's squad.
