German coach Berti Vogts hopes fate will favor Nigeria after their chances of booking a place in the African Nations Cup quarter-finals suffered a massive blow.

The Super Eagles were held to a goalless draw by Mali on Friday as their fate fell out of their hands.

They need to beat Benin while hope that Ivory Coast maintain their 100% record at the expense of Mali to have any chance of progressing.

Vogts is waiting for a gift from God and Ivory Coast, who already secured their last-eight berth.

"We now have only one hope and that is the Ivory Coast and God," he said after the Mali game.

The former Germany tactician bemoaned Nigeria's inability to convert their chances against Mali. His side also failed to score in the 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast.

"To win you have to score but it was a problem today and in the last match. Our players tried but our final passing was poor."

"I know it's not enough to have just one point from two games," he added.
