A late strike by substitute Carlos Tevez salvaged Manchester United a 1-1 away draw with Lyon in the first-leg of the Champions League knock-out phase on Wednesday.

France striker Karim Benzema fired the hosts in front nine minutes after the interval.

The 20-year-old controlled Jeremy Toulalan's pass before turning and hitting a low shot in off the post past Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar.

Argentinean striker Tevez, who replaced Paul Scholes in the 65th minute, drew United level three minutes from time.

Nani's right-wing cross deflected off Fred and went into the path of Tevez at the far post, who made no mistake from close range.

"Nani provided a greater threat for us," United coach Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports after the match.

"Carlos Tevez scored an important goal. It was a decent result without question. We count our blessings that we got back."
