Chelsea suffered a new blow to their number one keeper Petr Cech, who underwent facial surgery on Monday, following a training ground collision with a teammate.

The Czech custodian was supposed to return from an ankle injury in Tuesday's Champions League game against Fenerbahce, but his absence is now imminent.

"Petr Cech underwent surgery following a training ground accident which left him with lacerations to his lip and chin," read a Chelsea statement.

"Petr will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing as soon as possible."

Cech was sidelined for three months last season after he fractured his skull in a league game, and has been playing with a protective head gear ever since.

The Blues will have to carry on relying on Italian guardian Carlo Cudicini, who has been deputizing the former Rennes man since last month.
