The Professional Footballers’ Association have revealed on Friday six nominees for its award.
In-form Portuguese winger Ronaldo faces competition from Arsenal duo Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas.
Liverpool pair Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and Portsmouth keeper David James are also in the hunt.
Ronaldo is the favorite to land the award after his exploits with title holders United this term.
The former Sporting Lisbon man scored 36 goals in all competitions to help United occupy the Premiership summit and reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been also impressive in his first season in English football.
The Spain striker joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in the close season and quickly settled in. he notched 21 Premiership goals so far.
Arsenal frontman Emmanuel Adebayor also made a notable impact and managed to fill the void left by Thierry Henry’s departure to Barcelona.
The 20-year-old Fabregas is rated as one of the best midfielders on the planet.
