Manchester United retained their Premiership title on Sunday after a deserved 2-0 victory over Wigan as challengers Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Bolton Wanderers.

The Red Devils clinched the title after finishing on top of the league table with 87 points, two ahead of second-placed Chelsea.

Both teams meet in the UEFA Champions League final in Moscow on May 21.

United bagged their 17th title in the English League history to come within one triumph of rivals Liverpool.

Reading and Birmingham City were relegated despite recording wins over already-relegated Derby County and Blackburn Rovers respectively.

Ronaldo Penalty

At JJB Stadium, United took the lead after 33 points when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty after Emmerson Boyce fouled Wayne Rooney inside the area.

The Portuguese sensational winger took his tally to 31 goals in the Premiership.

Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland pulled off a string of impressive saves to deny United on many occasions.

Wigan striker Emile Heskey came close to leveling the score in the second-half when his header went just over the bar.

Welsh Winger Ryan Giggs ensured the victory ten minutes from time when he collected Rooney's through pass and went clear on goal before coolly slotting home.

Elsewhere, Chelsea surrendered their lead against Bolton at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues lost skipper John Terry early in the game after the England defender suffered a dislocated shoulder following a collision with teammate Petr Cech.

Andriy Shevchenko put the hosts in front two minutes past the hour mark but Kevin Davies secured a share of spoils deep into stoppage time.
