Manchester City have announced the appointment of Mark Hughes as new coach, following the sacking of Sven Goran Eriksson on Monday.

"Manchester City Football Club are today delighted to announce we have agreed terms with Mark Hughes to be our new Manager," a statement read on the Premiership club's official site.

Talks with the former Blackburn boss only lasted for two days, as he accepted the City offer despite temptations from Chelsea.

"I am delighted to welcome Mark on board. In our view he is the brightest young manager in the game and he was our number one target for the manager’s job," said City chairman Garry Cook.

"He made it clear to us from the moment we met that he shared our vision and ambition to make Manchester City one of the top sides in the country."

Hughes will be unveiled in a press conference on Thursday.
