Alessandro Del Piero will captain Italy in the EURO 2008 succeeding to Fabio Cannavaro who has been ruled out with a knee injury.

However it’s going to be Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon who will wear the armband as the 33-year old striker isn’t a regular starter for manager Roberto Donadoni.

“I'm absolutely delighted to be captain. Even though events conspired against Cannavaro, I'm absolutely delighted to have been given this role because for a footballer it's the ultimate honour to play for your country and to be made captain is even greater,” the 33-year old striker said.

Don chose Del Piero as he is the most capped player in the Azzurri. The armband will go then to Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo.

Italy will start their EURO quest on Monday against Holland.
