"Gareth Barry has stated in discussions with our manager he would like to leave Aston Villa to join Liverpool," the club said in a statement on their website.

"But Liverpool's bid for the player has been rejected and they have been informed of Villa's continued position in this matter."

Liverpool are seeking a replacement for Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonsi, who is close to joining Italian giants Juventus.

If Barry completes the Reds move, he will form a partnership with England teammate Steven Gerrard.
