Bayern Munich and France winger Franck Ribery has been ruled out for eight weeks with an ankle injury sustained against France last Tuesday.

A statement on Bayern’s website said that the 25-year old midfielder will undergo a surgery on Thursday.

Ribery had to quit France’s 2-0 loss to the Azzurri after only 10 minutes.

"He has a nasty ankle sprain. As for the knee, we're not quite sure yet how serious the injury is. Further checks are needed. He's walking on crutches; he can't put his foot down," France boss Raymond Domenech said on Wednesday.

Bayern Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented saying "We’re very sorry about Franck’s injury, but we’re delighted the initial, much more serious diagnosis turned out not to be the case,"

Initial reports suggested that Ribery might have fractured one of the lower leg bones.
